Chess Fever

Directed by Vsevolod Pudovkin (1925)

A manic comedy on the Russian passion for chess, Pudovkin's first film was shot during the International Chess Tournament in Moscow. The hero's love of chess distracts him from the girl he loves until she too succumbs to 'chess fever' and joins him. Using principles learned in Kuleshov's Workshop, the film combines newsreel footage with shots of actors hands and other objects.
