La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc

Carl Theodor Dreyer 1928

Carl Dreyer’s most famous film is one of the last masterworks of the silent screen. Set in a vast and elaborate castle, the film combines narrative simplicity with technical and visual sophistication in a linear account of the trial and martyrdom of Joan of Arc at the hands of her English captors.

The score, composed as a collaboration between the Hilliard Ensemble and Harmonie Band, complements the visual image through the opposition of antique and contemporary sound worlds, attaching itself to the vernacular music of the period (Dufay and Binchois in particular) with more abrasive instrumental interludes depicting the mental violence inflicted on the young and defenceless Joan. The premiere took place on July 28th 2007 in the Wroclaw Opera House where it was also filmed for Polish Television.
