Le Sang D'un Poete
Jean Cocteau 1930
A masterpiece of surrealism where Cocteau projects the inner life and imagination of a poet in filmic terms. With overtones of Pygmalion, living statues, talking hands and walk in mirrors are just some of the miracles performed by blending the real with the fantastic.
The score attempts to be true to the spirit of the original score by Georges Auric. It has passages reminiscent of French café music but blended with settings of the medieval composer Guillaume de Machaut in an attempt to match the timeless qualities of the film. The film is not entirely a ‘silent’ film and the small amount of spoken dialogue is replicated by means of sampling keyboards. (53 minutes)
Score by Paul Robinson 1998 commissioned by the South Bank Centre.
